Sciatica pain comforted at home
Sciatica pain comforted at home
Unbearable and shooting pain in the back which extends to the thighs and legs, indicate the ‘Slip disc’ problem. Sometimes it is confused with Sciatica.
Consultation with the Orthopaedic specialist is imminent but one can always try these quick exercises:
1. Give mild intermittent pressure on the reflex points, in the palm. Pressure on the points nearing the middle of palm will prove more effective since that area has direct link with the area of problems.
2. Let the patient lie on his stomach; place both thumbs at a distance of 1 inch from the back bone but facing each other. Apply 40 mild intermittent pressures pointing towards the backbone. The points must be chosen along the length of the back bone, at a regular interval of 2 inches
3. Identify the soft point at the back of the head. It is located in the middle of the head where the skull bone ends and neck starts. Give 30 mild intermittent pressure 2-3 times in a day to experience relief in slip disc problem
Hopefully, by the time these exercises are performed, the patient will be relaxed. Now you may consult your Doctor. No wonder, the patient might walk down to the doctor’s clinic.
Slip disc is caused when soft portion between two vertebrae are torn, ripped, herniated or degenerated. The jelly-like content of the disc then move into the spinal canal, pressing against the spinal nerves, thus producing intense and usually disabling pain and other symptoms.
It is usually difficult to identify the reason but broadly one of the following reasons, is indicated:
1. Physical strength of the body gets weaker
2. Injury in the back-bone
3. Lifting of heavy weight in a wrong posture
4. Jumping from heights
In order to gain relief, doctors prescribe pain killers and muscle strengthening medicines. Physiotherapy is also suggested. But relief may take any length of time. Many times, surgery is also suggested. Patients agree to it since they look for relief. Surgery in case of slip-disc should be considered as the last resort since it does not guarantee a permanent relief.
Acupressure has been found very effective for recovering from slip-disc problem. Sittings with an experienced Acupressure Therapist for 2-3 weeks help patients gain 60-70% relief.
Note: Patients suffering from Sciatica find great relief with the above exercises.
