In addition to the domino effect of joy and amusement, laughter is the best medicine, for a new study has found that it can be as healthy as exercise.
Scientists have found that laughter affects the body in a similar way to exercise, say a jog around the park – in fact, it lifts the mood, decreases stress hormones, enhances immune activity, lowers blood pressure and bad cholesterol.
For the study, a number of volunteers were asked to watch just 20 minutes of comedies and their blood samples saw a dramatic drop in stress hormones, blood pressure and levels of cholesterol.
Like exercise, they also had their appetite stimulated. That means that the “laughercise” can be a way to reduce heart disease and diabetes. It is especially important to the elderly who may find it hard to perform more physical activities, say the scientists.
Dr Lee Berk, from Loma Linda University, California, who led the study, said that emotions and behaviour had a physical impact on the body.
“The body’s response to repetitive laughter is similar to the effect of repetitive exercise. As the old biblical wisdom states, it may indeed be true that laughter is a good medicine,” he was quoted by the British media as saying.
The scientists, who have been studying the effects of laughter for more than two decades, said that the high one can get from a giggling fit was similar to the endorphin rush from exercise.
They have shown how it can reduce one’s risk of a heart attack and diabetes and generally regulate the body’s vital functions. It is also an important way to de-stress after a day’s work, say the scientists.
The findings were presented at the ‘Experimental Biology’ conference.

When the sun beats down harder each time you step out of the house, head to the nearest spa to cool your heels. You may slather yourself with creams, lotions and sunscreens, but are they enough to keep you fresh and going?
Agreed, a spa treatment requires time commitment, however, there is not much wiseness in postponing your spa visit till the next holiday. Simply kick all laziness and pamper yourself to a rejuvenating therapy that’ll brace you to face the torrid summer months ahead.
Any spa treatment is not the answer, go for a specialty summer therapy that will do wonders to your body and make you feel so much lighter. We get talking to spa experts on therapies tailored for the great Indian summer and how they help restore vitality…
Cooling mint aromatherapy
This one refrains from the use of concentrated massage oils that make the glands hyperactive and leaves a burn or two. After bath, a light mint-based oil is used for a relaxing massage as mint is known to cool and comfort sunburned skin. Sandalwood with olive oil and almond oil are other variants that bear equally impressive results. Not to forget, the ‘Swiss knife of aromatherapy’, lavender known for its calming properties can be used both in summer and winter. They don’t particularly have a cooling or healing effect on the skin as mint or sandalwood does, but it helps ease frazzled nerves.
Then you are given a cold shower which soothes your nerves and your body is left tingling with freshness. Throw in a mint and sandalwood spa manicure and pedicure as well. Aromatherapy is most popular as the oils keep changing with the weather.
Body scrub with pack
You need to reserve at the most an hour for this therapy. Apricot is the most popular and widely used variety of body scrub. It exfoliates dead skin cells making skin glow. Aloe Vera gel is ideally suited for summer as it helps hydrate the skin. Follow it up with a eucalyptus oil herbal steam. A face pack or mask, depending on your skin type is further applied on you. And finally, a refreshing shower in lukewarm water. Sunscreen lotion with an SPF 15 is a must before stepping out in the sun again.
Shiatsu
A contemporary therapy with its roots in Oriental traditional medicine, Shiatsu does not use any oil, instead a dry powder is used to massage pressure points. The therapy is based on acupuncture. However, unlike most spa treatments, the receiver remains clothed through the session, and the practitioner uses his deft hands to apply pressure precisely at localised points. And for applying pressure on a larger area, he uses palms, elbows and knees.
Himalayan clay body wrap
The treatment uses a high concentration of organic herbs known for their therapeutic qualities along with mint and sandalwood powder for their oil and impurity absorbing qualities. You are first massaged thoroughly with a body polish, after which a body mask made of organic herbs is applied neck down and left for about half hour to allow the body heat to open up the pores. This helps in detoxification and absorption of minerals. And finally, a shower in lukewarm water.
Udvarthanam
Udvarthanam is an Ayurvedic therapy that is extremely effective in summer. In this hour-long treatment, the whole body is massaged with specially prepared medicinal powder made of herbs to enhance the suppleness of the skin. First, the body is massaged with a light oil with water content, and then, scrubbed using a mixture of oil and herbal powder. Further on, you are given a eucalyptus oil steam bath and a shower in lukewarm water. If you have the luxury of time, you can also go for a Jacuzzi. Udvarthanam is beneficial for those with high blood pressure and cholesterol. So much so, ten sessions a month can make you lose a few inches with flair. It is also a perfect remedy for blisters, acne and prickly heat.
Essentials for your own home spa…
- Grow an Aloe Vera plant in your kitchen garden so that you can off and on make use of its leaves to cleanse your face. Always refrigerate the leaf for about 20 minutes before using it. While going to bed apply the squashed Aloe Vera gel scrupulously on your face and neck, and leave it until next morning.
- Stock up on coconut water. It hydrates the body and makes you summer fit.
- Cover your eyes up with cucumber slices and take a beauty nap. It will do you a world of good. Or you can refrigerate the cucumber for 20 minutes and then crush it to apply it on your face.
- Don’t use the same sunscreen lotion across seasons even if the expiry date is not anywhere close. Sunscreens need to be changed every few months, for their properties slowly die down.
- Lip balm with an SPF 15 is an absolute must-have. You can go for the fragrant fruity flavours; they are a perfect substitute for lip gloss.
- Give yourself a nice foot bath complete with scrub to avoid dry feet.
- Go for sandalwood, mint or Aloe Vera based body soaps.
- Aromatic face scrub is refreshing after a hard day at work.
- A sea mineral body polish.
- Lavender bath oil. Add two drops of it in a bucket of water and bathe. It cures body odour.
Summer months are challenging especially for acne-prone skin. Protect yourself from sun scald by using exfoliants regularly, going for weekly facials and generally taking extra care of your skin.

From exotic juices to cans of cocktail peanuts, more and more edibles in the supermarket are being dubbed “antiaging” by some marketer or media pundit. The real deal about munchies that keep you youthful? They come from the earth, not a vacuum pack.
We’re not the only ones who are saying that. Take a look at what the longest-lived people in the world are eating (if you know us, this list will look familiar, but with a few twists). Then, put their favorites on your own table.
Costa Rica: Beans for Breakfast
Residents of Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula are four times more likely than most North Americans to live past age 90. One reason may be dishes like gallo pinto, a tasty mix of black beans and rice flavored with onion, red peppers, garlic, olive oil, cilantro, and a salsa lizano – a condiment a little like Worcestershire sauce. The Oz part of this team learned on a trip to Nicoya that big breakfasts that begin with beans rule there. But don’t limit yourself; this dish is great at any meal.
Nova Scotia: Wild Blueberry “Grunt”
Some of Nova Scotia’s picturesque villages are home to Canada’s highest percentages of centenarians – people who’ve lived for at least 100 years. One reason may be polyphenol-packed wild blueberries produced by the millions of tons on this island. Luckily, you can find frozen wild blueberries in your supermarket. Use ‘em to make a traditional “grunt"– lightly cooked blueberries (skip the sweetener that’s usually in the recipe; the berries are sweet enough!) served over a biscuit (but please, make it whole grain, or skip the biscuit altogether). It’s also known as a slump, a fungi, a buckle, or a bang belly.
France: Wine
In this country, local red wine is king. And for good reason. Moderate drinking (1 glass for women, up to 2 for men) with a meal a day seems to explain some of the “French Paradox"– low rates of heart disease despite a penchant for artery-clogging goodies like cheese. It may help explain why the French tie the Italians (another nation with a healthy love of wine) as Western Europe’s longest-living people. Wine’s magic seems to come from a few components: ethanol, which boosts levels of healthy HDL cholesterol; resveratrol, which new research suggests can mimic the life-extending effects of cutting calories; and polyphenols, which rev up the body’s own cell-protecting antioxidants. Why not try a red wine from a vineyard near you, or head for a heart-healthy zinfandel, syrah, pinot noir, or cabernet sauvignon?
Greece: Lots of Veggies, Little Meat
On some Greek islands, one-third of the residents have already celebrated their 90th birthdays. Their longevity secret? The famed Mediterranean diet. When researchers quizzed 23,349 Greek women and men about what’s on their plates, they found that death rates were lowest for those who ate the most fruit, vegetables, beans, and olive oil. The occasional glass of wine helped, too. So did fish, seafood, whole grains, and dairy products. What wasn’t on their plates also mattered. Those who ate red meat just a few times a month lived longer than those who indulged more frequently.
Eating lots of vegetables accounted for 16% of the youth-power of Mediterranean eating. Drizzle on a little olive oil and top with a scattering of walnuts and you can more than double the impact. Not only will it be delicious, the good fats pamper your heart and help your body absorb more of the carotenoids and other nutrients in cooked veggies and in salad greens.
Japan: Tofu
Tofu’s on sale in the produce department of nearly every supermarket. Good news, because on the Japanese island of Okinawa, it may be why residents age gracefully to 100+ more often than anywhere else on earth. Researchers credit this mild-tasting soy curd’s low fat content and high levels of good-for-you saponins and isoflavones. Chunk up some extra-firm tofu instead of chicken or pork in a stir-fry, or use soy crumbles in place of ground meat in a hearty spaghetti sauce. Marinate first to heighten flavour; we love it with ginger, garlic, and low-sodium soy sauce.
So instead of falling for an anti-aging additive pitch, steer yourself toward these flavourful, health-giving goodies. You’ll see what these cultures have known for years: When it comes to the tastiest anti-aging foods, Mother Nature makes the best.

Exercise is the key to healthy body. Everybody knows it but still they compromise on this fact. The result is – 60 percent people in America are overweight. Millions of people are suffering from Hypertension/high blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol. Hospitals are full. Everybody is trying to find the solution in medicines but it has its own limitations.
Exercise is the cheapest way to improve upon various ailments, without any side effects. General excuse is non-availability of time.
Are you aware that INTERVAL TRAINING – newest exercise research is showing that you can cut your workout time significantly and reap even better benefits?
You break your exercise session into short segments that alternate high intensity with a rest period in-between. It can dramatically improve your cardiovascular fitness and fat-burning capabilities in a fraction of the time.
Take this latest study, in which men pedalled on a stationary bike for 20 minutes using interval training (they pedalled at the highest intensity they could for a minute, then pedalled slowly to rest for a minute, and so on for the 20-minute period). These men received the same benefits as they would have had they exercised at a lower intensity for one hour or more, leading researchers to say interval training “may represent an alternative to endurance training to improve metabolic health and reduce the risk for chronic diseases.”
Several studies have confirmed that exercising in shorter bursts with rest periods in between burns more fat than exercising continuously for an entire session. This has been shown to hold true even when the session is not done at an extremely high intensity.
In one such study, those who cycled for 40 minutes, alternating four-minute bursts at 90 percent effort with two minutes of rest, improved their cardiovascular fitness by 13 percent, and were able to burn 36 percent more fat during a later hour-long moderate cycling session.
Another study took it even further, showing you can burn more fat exercising for 20 minutes than for 40 minutes!
In their trial, women either exercised for 20 minutes, alternating 8 seconds of sprinting on a bike with 12 seconds of exercising lightly, or exercised at a regular pace for 40 minutes. After exercising three times a week for 15 weeks, those who did the 20-minute, alternating routine lost three times as much fat as the other women.
The researchers believe this type of exercise works because it produces a unique metabolic response. Intermittent sprinting produces high levels of chemical compounds called catecholamine, which allow more fat to be burned from under your skin and within your muscles. The resulting increase in fat oxidation is thought to drive the increased weight loss.
Again, one of the best parts of interval training is that it cuts down on the amount of time you need to exercise, which is great if you don’t have time for hour-long cardio workouts.

Insomnia is a sleeping disorder which can be primary or secondary. It is caused by stress, anxiety and depression. Secondary insomnia is failure to maintain the sleeping state due to illnesses such as asthma, arthritis and sometimes, side effects of pain medications.
What is sleep and why is it important?
In the dark, our pineal gland secretes the hormone called melatonin, responsible for inducing sleep. Sleep is a building process that restores the body’s energy supplies. It is a time to replenish mental and emotional energies, and connect with our higher self. Yoga helps to get a good night sleep with stimulatory effect on the brain and the nervous system. Yoga allows better blood circulation in the brain which normalizes the sleep cycle. Yoga promotes elimination of toxins from the body. With breathing exercises, more oxygen enters the body and promotes a mind free from troubles. Practice these postures and see the results for yourself.

We all know that egg is one of the most nutrient-dense foods, but now a new study claims eating one egg daily can help fight obesity.
The British study, which analysed 71 research papers on the nutritional composition of eggs and their role in diet, found that eggs are packed with vitamin D, vitamin B12, selenium and choline that could also play a significant role in dieting and weight loss.
According to the researchers, a medium-sized egg has fewer than 80 calories and provides more than 20 per cent of the recommended daily allowance.
Dr Carrie Ruxton, an independent dietitian and lead author of the report, said: “There are clear nutritional benefits to eating eggs on a regular basis. Emerging evidence suggests that eggs may be beneficial for satiety, weight control and eye health.
“With previous limits on egg consumption lifted, most people would benefit from a return to the days of going to work on an egg.”
The study confirmed that eggs contain the richest mix of essential amino acids – crucial for children, adolescents and young adults since a balance of them is required for proper growth and repair, the Daily Mail reported.
It also claimed that the high levels of antioxidants found in eggs could even help prevent age-related muscular degeneration, a leading cause of blindness.
The research team highlighted data from studies in the US which found that people who ate eggs had higher intakes of nearly all nutrients compared with non-egg eaters.
Low levels of vitamin D have been linked with a host of medical conditions including poor bone health, cancer, heart disease, multiple sclerosis, immune disorders and mental health problems.
The study, which will appear in the June issue of journal Nutrition and Food Science, identified specific groups which could benefit from eating more eggs, including the young, heavy meat-eaters and those who shun milk.
Dr Ruxton added: “The health benefits of eggs would appear to be so great that it’s perhaps no exaggeration to call them a superfood – they are one of the most nutrient-dense foods available.
“Eggs are not only low in calories but are packed with nutrients that are essential to healthy living. They are an ideal food at every stage of life, as well as being easy to cook and enjoyable to eat.”

While your hubby may not notice it when you change your hairdo or wear a sexy new outfit, there is one thing he will notice for sure. When you treat him as a dear friend as well as your romantic lover, he feels nice and important. Men get attracted to women who make them feel this way. Wondering how to go about it? Read on.
1. Make everyday special
Husbands are not such hard nuts to crack. They are simpler than they appear. Men notice even things that are not big enough for you. They appreciate the little things you do just to make their life better. Mohit Mehta, entrepreneur, says, “I simply love when my fiance waits for me to get free from work. Even when we are meeting after a long gap, she does not complain. Instead she greets me with her beautiful smile.” It is as simple as setting up priorities in life. According to relationship expert Dr. Sameer Malhotra, “Setting up priorities would help a couple to balance their relationship with each other and society.”
2. Create a comfort zone
The most important thing that needs to be developed is a comfort zone, where a person can be himself and feel at ease. “Communication is the best way to kill differences and to flourish in a relationship,” says Dr. Malhotra.
Discussing work related issues, likes and dislikes, or even embarrassments can be helpful. Neharika Mathur, a journalist with a lifestyle magazine, says, “We discuss each others’ work often - laugh together at funny incidents that happen at the workplace, and discuss matters such as appraisals and our relationships with our respective bosses.”
One needs to create a comfortable environment, where both partners are free to express their feelings and thoughts.
3. Talk about sex
Talking about intimate sessions can be helpful too. Discuss about how it feels when you do something out-of-the-box and about improvements you can make to your present sessions. It would lead the couple to be in a more accepting mode and they can explore more about each other.
4. Understand each other’s expectations and needs
It’s always better to understand each other’s temperament and choices believes Dr Malhotra. If you find your hubby getting irritated on issues in particular, try finding out the reason behind it. And if the issue is major, communicating about the same would help. In minor issues, just try avoiding it to maintain a good rapport with him.
5. Avoid people he dislikes
Nimisha Jain, visual merchandiser, says, “I have a fair idea about which people in my circle he has issues with, so I try and avoid those people when he is around, and thankfully, they understand his temperament.”
6. Accept flaws
We know that nobody on this planet is perfect. Each one of us is born with personality flaws that can be easily dealt with. When you are in a relationship, accepting those flaws and finding ways to overcome them is the key to happiness. Dr. Malhotra says, “One should never be judgmental towards the spouse in a relationship, as it can only increase the discomfort and insecurities. Always try not to label the person with your own virtues.” Understanding the need of emotional support can do wonders to your bonding.
7. Awesome Twosome
One thing to understand in a marriage is the differences in personalities. And the best way to deal with these differences is generating common interests. Tanu, Chartered Accountant, Genpact, says “We love doing things together. We watch movies, go for vacations, party with friends, and so on. By doing things together, we gradually develop interest in activities that are common to our interests.”
By doing things together, both of you can enjoy that feeling of togetherness associated with the task and you can grab an opportunity to learn more about your partner’s choices. Another way of dealing with the differences in personalities is creating a balance between choices. “We do not have many common interests. He likes doing the “boy things” - sports and traveling, while I’d rather curl up with a good book. But whenever possible, he takes me on a book-buying spree and sponsors it, and I accompany him to a live cricket match once in a while,” says Neharika.
