Can Touching Your Toes Test Your Arteries?

Why the number of heart-attack deaths should surge so significantly during the holidays still is not clear, although cardiologists have some well-founded guesses. “We suspect there is often an inappropriate delay in seeking medical attention” at this time of year, says Dr. Robert A. Kloner, a professor of medicine at the University of Southern California, a cardiologist at Good Samaritan Hospital and the lead author of both the 2004 study of deaths in Los Angeles County and the accompanying editorial. “People ignore the pain in their chest,” perhaps because they don’t wish to disrupt the festivities or they misinterpret the ache as overindulgence, Dr. Kloner says. By the time they get to an emergency room, it’s too late to save them. Stress and tension likely play a role, too. “Spending time with family members can be trying,” he says. “And there are often concerns about financial issues, buying presents and so on.” Even a wood-burning fireplace, a romantic symbol of wintry, holiday evenings, could be a contributing factor, because particulate matter in the air has been connected to an increase in the risk of heart attacks, Dr. Kloner says.

A provocative new study published this year in the journal Heart and Circulatory Physiology suggests, however, that there may be a novel way to test at least one element of your heart’s health right in your own living room, right in the middle of the holidays. Sit on the floor with your legs stretched straight out in front of you, toes pointing up. Reach forward from the hips. Are you flexible enough to touch your toes? If so, then your cardiac arteries probably are also flexible.

In the study’s experiment, scientists from the University of North Texas and several Japanese universities recruited 526 healthy adults between the ages of 20 and 83 and had them perform the basic sit-and-reach test described above, although their extensions were measured precisely with digital devices. Taking into account age and gender, researchers then sorted the subjects into either the high-flexibility group or the poor-flexibility group.

Next, using blood-pressure cuffs at each person’s ankles and arms, researchers estimated how flexible their arteries were. Cardiac artery flexibility is one of the less familiar elements of heart health. Supple arterial walls allow the blood to move freely through the body. Stiff arteries require the heart to work much harder to force blood through the unyielding vessels and over time could, according to Kenta Yamamoto, a researcher at North Texas and lead author of the study, contribute to a greater risk for heart attack and stroke.

What the researchers found was a clear correlation between inflexible bodies and inflexible arteries in subjects older than 40. Adults with poor results on the sit-and-reach test also tended to have relatively high readings of arterial stiffness. In short, the study concluded that “a less flexible body indicates arterial stiffening, especially in middle-aged and older adults.” No such correlation was found in those under 40, even when gender and fitness were considered as factors.

These results do not mean, of course, that people in the inflexible group were in imminent danger of a heart attack on Christmas Day. Arterial stiffening does not indicate or inevitably lead to arterial disease, Mr. Yamamoto emphasizes. In fact, some degree of arterial stiffening is inevitable with age. But the stiffer your arteries are, the less efficient your heart.

How it is that stiff muscles in the back and legs are linked to stiff tissues near the heart is an issue that hasn’t been fully elucidated, Mr. Yamamoto says, although arterial walls are composed of the same kinds of elastic tissues as muscles elsewhere in the body. So it’s likely, he says, that alterations in the composition of muscle tissues in the lower back (including aging-related alterations in the amount of collagen within the muscles) could be occurring in the arterial walls at the same time.

What is surprising are some early indications that increasing your flexibility might somehow loosen up your arteries, too. That was the accidental and, as yet unreplicated finding of a small 2008 study at the University of Texas at Austin. The study was designed to examine whether weight lifting increased arterial stiffness. (It didn’t, at least on this occasion.) The control group consisted of people who stretched. They were not expected to show any change in cardiac function, but over the course of 13 weeks they in fact increased the pliability of their arteries by more than 20 percent.

Mr. Yamamoto and his colleagues are currently conducting an ambitious study to determine just how and whether stretching directly affects the arteries. The results won’t be available for some time. Until then, Mr. Yamamoto says, it’s best to consider your flexibility (or lack there of) as a marker of your probable arterial elasticity. “If you can touch your toes in the sit-and-reach test, your flexibility is good,” he says. If you can’t, you might consider talking to your cardiologist — although, remember, as Mr. Yamamoto points out, that tight arteries are not necessarily diseased arteries. They’re just less than ideally fit.

As for avoiding the “Merry Christmas Coronary,” Dr. Kloner’s advice is succinct: “Don’t ignore symptoms,” he says. Avoid overimbibing, too, and tamp down stress. If this requires turning down an invitation from a wheedling relative, you could always try explaining that your cardiologist would say that it’s for the best.

Generally speaking, adults need to get between six and nine hours of sleep a night. But there are definitely exceptions. Some people can, in fact, function well on as few as five hours a night, while others need up to 10.
You need more sleep during times of illness or emotional stress, or during the winter months. And pregnant women often need several hours more sleep than usual during their first three months of pregnancy.
A good rule of thumb to follow is that if you feel tired when you wake up, you probably aren’t getting enough sleep. Most of us have set times that we need to wake up in the morning, so getting more sleep, for most of us, means going to bed earlier.
If you find that you’re not waking up feeling refreshed, it’s a good idea to devote some attention to revamping your sleeping habits. Find some tips to improve your sleep:

1. Listen to relaxation CDs
2. Avoid before-bed snacks, particularly grains and sugars
3. Sleep in complete darkness
4. No TV right before bed
5. Wear socks to bed
6. Read something spiritual or religious.
7. Avoid using loud alarm clocks
8. Journaling: If you often lay in bed with your mind racing, it might be helpful keep a journal and write down your thoughts before bed

16. Avoid alcohol: It avoids you from falling into the deeper stages of sleep, where the body does most of its healing.
17. Lose weight. Being overweight can increase the risk of sleep apnea, which will prevent a restful nights sleep.
18. Avoid foods that you may be sensitive to. This is particularly true for dairy and wheat products, as they may have effect on sleep, such as causing apnea, excess congestion, gastrointestinal upset, and gas, among others.
19. No fluids within 2 hours of going to bed. This will reduce the likelihood of needing to go to the bathroom. You may visit bathroom before going to bed.
20. Take a hot bath or shower before bed. When body temperature is raised in the late evening, it will fall at bedtime, facilitating sleep,
21. Menopauses should consult their physicians: The hormonal changes at this time may cause problems if not properly addressed.
22. Don’t change your bedtime. You should go to bed, and wake up, at the same times each day, even on the weekends. This will help your body to get into a sleep rhythm and make it easier to fall asleep and get up in the morning.
23. Ensure you are exercising regularly. Exercising for at least 30 minutes everyday can help you fall asleep. Studies show exercising in the morning is the best if you can do it.
24. Establish a bedtime routine. This could include meditation, deep breathing, massage from your partner using aromatherapy or essential oils. It helps you release the day’s tensions.
25. Put your work away at least one hour before bed. This will give your mind a chance to unwind so you can go to sleep feeling calm.

Choose dog as a better walking partner

Is it better to walk a human or to walk a dog?

New research from the University of Missouri has found that people who walk dogs are more consistent about regular exercise and show more improvement in fitness than people who walk with a human companion. In a 12-week study of 54 older adults at an assisted living home, 35 people were assigned to a walking program for five days a week, while the remaining 19 served as a control group. Among the walkers, 23 selected a friend or spouse to serve as a regular walking partner along a trail laid out near the home. Another 12 participants took a bus daily to a local animal shelter where they were assigned a dog to walk.

To the surprise of the researchers, the dog walkers showed a big improvement in fitness, while the human walkers began making excuses to skip the workout. Walking speed among the dog walkers increased by 28 percent, compared with just a 4 percent increase among the human walkers.

“What happened was nothing short of remarkable,” said Rebecca A. Johnson, a nursing professor and director of the Research Center for Human Animal Interaction at the University of Missouri’s College of Veterinary Medicine. “The improvement in walking speed means their confidence in their walking ability had increased and their balance had increased. To have a 28 percent improvement in walking speed is mind boggling.”

Ms. Johnson said that because some people are afraid of dogs, the participants were given the choice of walking with a human or a dog as the companion. Ms. Johnson said the dog walkers were far more consistent in sticking with the program than those who were walking with humans.

“In the human walking group, they were regularly discouraging each other from walking,” she said. “Missouri is a hot state. We would hear them saying: ‘It’s hot today. I don’t want to walk, do you?’ ”

The response from participants in the dog-walking group — and their dog companions — was very different.

“When the people came to the animal shelter, they bounced off the bus and said, ‘Where’s my dog?”’ Ms. Johnson said. “And the dogs never gave any discouragement from walking.”

Ms. Johnson said she suspects differences will show up in other areas, like depression and anxiety, although that data are still under review and the final study has not yet been published.

But there were also other subtle indicators of improvement among the dog-walking group. Many people in the dog-walking group stopped using canes and walkers. “They would say, ‘Now I’m physically fit enough to take my dog for a walk,”’ Ms. Johnson said.

Try out these fifteen tricks with a white, non-gel toothpaste (unless otherwise noted), and watch that cavity-fighting, breath-freshening tube of wonder work its magic.

1. Relieve irritation from bug bites, sores, and blisters. These skin irritations all tend to weep and, in the case of bug bites, often itch. Apply a drop of toothpaste to a bug bite or insect sting to stop the itching and decrease any swelling. When applied to sores or blisters, it dries them up, thus allowing the wound to heal faster. It’s best when used overnight.

2. Soothe a stinging burn. For minor burns that don’t involve an open wound, toothpaste can deliver temporary cooling relief. Apply it delicately to the affected area immediately after a burn develops; it temporarily relieves the sting and prevents the wound from weeping or opening.

3. Decrease the size of a facial blemish. Want to speed up the healing of a zit? Apply a tiny dot of toothpaste to the affected area at night before bed. Wash it off in the morning.

4. Clean up your fingernails. Our teeth are made of enamel, and toothpaste is good for them, so it stands to reason that toothpaste would also be good for our fingernails. For cleaner, shinier, and stronger nails, simply scrub the underneath and tops of fingernails with a toothbrush and toothpaste.

5. Keep hair in place. Gel toothpastes contain the same water-soluble polymers that many hair gels are made of. If you’re looking to style and hold an extreme hair creation, try gel toothpaste as your go-to product if you’re out of regular hair gel. (This is also a great trick for making baby barrettes stay in place.)

6. Scrub away stinky smells. Garlic, fish, onion, and other pungent foods can permeate the skin cells on our hands. Scrubbing hands and fingertips briefly with toothpaste removes all traces of smelly odors

7. Remove stains. Toothpaste can make tough stains on both clothing and carpets disappear. For clothes, apply toothpaste directly to the stain and rub briskly until the spot is gone, then wash as usual. (Note that using a whitening toothpaste on colors can sometimes bleach the fabric.) For carpet stains, apply toothpaste to the stain and scrub it with an abrasive brush, then rinse immediately.

8. Spruce up dirty shoes. This tactic works great on running shoes or scuffed-up leather shoes. As with carpet stains, apply toothpaste directly to the dirty or scuffed area, then scrub with a brush and wipe clean.

9. Remove crayon stains on painted walls. Rub a damp cloth with toothpaste gently on the marked-up wall and watch the Crayola marks disappear.

10. Make silver jewelry and other silver pieces sparkle. Rub toothpaste onto jewelry and leave overnight. Wipe clean with a soft cloth in the morning. Make diamonds shine by giving them a gentle scrub using a toothbrush, toothpaste, and a little water. Rinse thoroughly to remove all traces of toothpaste. Do not use this method on pearls, as it will damage their finish.

11. Remove scratches on DVDs and CDs. This remedy has been used with mixed success rates, but it seems to work fairly well on shallow scratches and smudges. Apply a thin coating of toothpaste to the disc and rub gently, then rinse clean.

12. Tidy up piano keys before tickling them. Piano keys retain oil from the skin, which then attracts dust and dirt. Clean away grime gently with a damp, lint-free cloth and toothpaste; after rubbing in the toothpaste, wipe the keys clean with a second lint-free cloth.

13. Deodorize baby bottles. If baby bottles develop a sour-milk smell, a good cleaning with some toothpaste and a bottle scrubber will clean away residue and deodorize. Always make sure to rinse well.

14. Remove the burned crust on irons. For those of you who still use an iron, you may find that after time, the plate of the iron develops a burned crust. The silica in toothpaste gently grinds away this rusty-looking layer.

15. Defog goggles. Scuba divers, swimmers, and triathletes may already know about this handy little trick: Rub a small spot of toothpaste into each lens of your goggles, then rinse thoroughly, and voila! There’ll be no need to ever buy expensive defogger gels again. Avoid rubbing too vigorously, though, as the abrasive ingredients in toothpaste could scratch the lenses.

Ingredients:
• 1-1/2 lbs salmon filets, skin and bones removed, cut into 4 pieces
• 1/2 medium sized onion, chopped
• 2 medium cloves garlic, chopped
• 2 TBS + 2 tsp fresh lemon juice
• 1-1/2 cups fresh orange juice
• 1 tsp fennel seeds
• 2 TBS minced fresh parsley, or if you have it, green fennel tops
• salt and white pepper to taste

Directions:
1. Preheat broiler and place a stainless steel or cast iron skillet under broiler for about 10 minutes to get it very hot.
2. Chop onions and garlic and let sit for 5 minutes to enhance their hidden health-promoting properties.
3. While skillet is heating, place chopped onion, garlic, fennel seeds, 2 TBS lemon juice, and orange juice in a shallow, wide saucepan and cook on high heat for about 10-15 minutes to reduce to half the volume.
4. Season salmon pieces with 2 tsp lemon juice, salt and pepper and place on hot pan from broiler. Return pan to broiler (approximately 5-7 inches from heat) and broil salmon for about 7 minutes depending on thickness (10 minutes per inch of thickness). Do not turn, as salmon is cooking on both sides at once.
5. Remove salmon from pan, and place on platter. Season citrus sauce with salt and pepper and strain liquid over salmon. Sprinkle with finely chopped parsley.

Cranberry and Fresh Pear Cobbler for After-dinner treat

This is a wonderful after-dinner treat that provides a great combination of flavors and health benefits to your Healthiest Way of Eating! Cranberries, like blueberries, rate high in their concentration of antioxidants to combat free radical activity, while the walnuts give you an extra boost of health-promoting omega-3 fatty acids.

Prep and Cook Time: 30 minutes
Ingredients:

1 medium orange*
1/2 cup dried cranberries
2 tsp honey
1/2 ripe pear (Bosc or other firm variety)
¼ cup + 2 TBS walnuts

Directions:
Grate enough orange rind to make 1 tsp zest and place in a mixing bowl.
Cut the orange in half and juice both halves into the same bowl as the rind.
Add the cranberries and honey. Mix until the honey is dissolved. Let sit for 1/2 hour to allow cranberries to soften.
After the cranberries have softened, cut the pear into 1/4-inch cubes and add to the bowl.
Add 1/4 cup walnuts.
Divide the mixture into 2 dessert dishes and sprinkle each with 1 TBS of the chopped walnuts.

Enjoy this dish right away, before the pear starts to brown.

Vitamin C Keeps Diabetes at Bay

It may not be news that a healthy diet plays a role in keeping type 2 diabetes at bay, but exactly which dietary components are most important is less well understood. A new study sheds light on this question, suggesting that eating more fruit and vegetables rich in vitamin C is one way to reduce diabetes risk.

Make vitamin C a priority

These findings come out of the European Prospective Investigation of Cancer–Norfolk (EPIC–Norfolk) study, a long-term research effort focused on determining how nutrition and lifestyle factors affect risk of chronic diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and heart disease.

To arrive at the latest results, researchers collected diet information and blood samples from 21,831 men and women aged 40 to 75 years, who lived in Norfolk, England, and were free of diabetes at study enrollment. Researchers tracked new cases of diabetes in the group during 12 years of follow-up.

Study participants with the highest blood levels of vitamin C were 62% less likely to develop diabetes than those with the lowest vitamin C levels. Men and women who ate the most fruit and vegetables were 22% less likely to develop diabetes than those who ate the least. When considering fruit separately, the researchers found that people consuming the most fruit were 30% less likely to develop diabetes than those consuming the least.

The finding that vitamin C levels are more strongly correlated with reduced diabetes risk than fruit and vegetable intake may lead you to conclude that a supplement is the answer, but avoid this trap: The study authors note that errors are common when measuring what people eat and approximately 90% of the vitamin C intake in the study group came from fruit and vegetables, not dietary supplements. The study authors conclude that the results, “re-endorse the public health message of the beneficial effect of increasing total fruit and vegetable intake.”

Getting the C you need from food

Vitamin C is important for reducing diabetes risk, but where you get this superstar nutrient is even more critical. Use the following tips to “C” your way to better health.

• Start your day with fruit. Add frozen fruit to your oatmeal. The hot cereal will thaw the fruit and you’ll get a dose of vitamin C.
• Try frozen and fresh. Fresh fruit is terrific when in season, but don’t shy away from frozen. A half cup of frozen peaches provides more than 100% of daily C and a half cup of strawberries provides more than 50%.
• Enjoy citrus. Try oranges, tangerines, and even lemons. A squeeze of lemon juice into your tea or water is an easy way to add C into your diet.
• Don’t skip veggies. Many focus on fruit for vitamin C, but red, yellow, and green peppers; broccoli; Brussels sprouts; and even kohlrabi contain ample C.
• Avoid boiling veggies. This can remove vitamin C; instead, steam, sauté, and stir-fry.
• Go tropical. Papayas, mangos, and pineapple all are excellent sources of vitamin C.

Deodorants may cause Breast cancer

Are you aware that the standard deodorant and antiperspirant is 90% aluminum? When you use it in your underarm region, it is easily absorbed in the skin particularly when the underarm region is shaved.

Once it is in the body, it mimies the hormone oestrogen, which is known to be involved in the development of breast cancer.

Researchers from the Keele University in Staffordshire in UK investigated tissue samples from 17 women who had breast cancer and found ‘significantly higher’ level of the metal in the underarm region of the breast than in the tissue from the other region of the breast.
Research team leader Dr Chris Exley said it was reasonable to conclude that deodorant were the most likely cause for those high level of aluminum in the underarm region of the breast.

5-Minute Healthy Steamed Collard Greens (Recipes for health – 101)

Prep and Cook Time: 5 minutes

Ingredients:
• 1 pound collard greens, chopped

• Mediterranean Dressing
• 1 tsp lemon juice

• sea salt and black pepper to taste
• 1-1/2 TBS sunflower seeds

• Optional:
• 1/2 red onion, sliced (add to steamers with collard greens)
• 6 kalamata olives, sliced
• 3 TBS pumpkin seeds
• 5 drops tamari soy sauce
dash of cayenne pepper
Directions:
1. Fill bottom of steamer with 2 inches of water.
2. While steam is building up, slice collard greens leaves into 1/2-inch slices and cut again crosswise. Cut stems into 1/4-inch slices. Let both leaves and stems sit for at least 5 minutes to enhance their health-promoting properties.
3. Press or chop garlic and let sit for at least 5 minutes to bring out more of its health-promoting properties.
4. Steam collard greens for no more than 5 minutes.
5. Transfer to a bowl. For more flavor, toss collard greens with the remaining ingredients and any of the optional ingredients you desire while they are still hot. (Mediterranean Dressing does not need to be made separately).

Turmeric is a miracle herb for skins. Since ages, it is customary for an Indian girl to apply turmeric paste on face arms and legs, before getting married. It helps in adding a glow to the complexion of the girl.

Freshly ground turmeric powder is added to raw milk or rose water to make a face pack and applied on face for 30 minutes and then washed off with water. It will give good results within 30 days.

Face pack should be made by adding lemon juice and honey in turmeric powder and applying it on face. It will improve the complexion and keep the skin – soft.

Turmeric powder (fine) can be mixed with gram flour, raw milk and lemon juice to make a paste and applied on face for 30 minutes. Later it is washed with cold water.

A mix of yogurt, tomato juice and war oat meal is applied on the face. After 25 minutes, oat meal is scrubbed off and then the face is washed with cold water. It will help to remove the dead skin from the face and give the skin a soft feel and fresher look.

Dip the cotton ball in lemon juice and wipe the face. It will work as natural bleach. Sun exposure should be avoided after the treatment. Step out after applying sunscreen lotion.

Ancient Egyptian Art of Body Sugaring

Body sugaring is a method for removing body hair that is a cheap, homemade alternative to waxing (or shaving). The theory behind body sugaring is that the hair is removed by the root, and when it grows back there will be less of it, and it will be softer and not stubbly as it is if a razor had been used.

Body sugaring is done by making a paste of sugar, water, and lemon juice that has been heated to the softball candy stage.

After you have let the paste cool enough so that it won’t burn, you spread it on your skin, cover it with cotton strips of cloth, and then rip the cloth off like one does a bandage. Most find sugaring less painful than waxing.

Due to many requests from readers for this recipe, I have looked hard for what I have finally found and give you here, what I think is the best formula:

INGREDIENTS
2 cups sugar
¼ cup lemon juice
¼ cup water
Equipment: Candy thermometer
Combine the ingredients in a heavy saucepan, and heat on low using a candy thermometer. Watch the mixture very carefully so that it doesn’t boil over. Heat the mixture to 250 F on the candy thermometer; this is the hardball candy stage.

Remove from the heat and let cool enough to pour into a jar without breaking or melting the jar. (Note that this jar will be reheated in the future. Make sure it is safe for whatever form of reheating you plan to do—in the microwave, or in a pan of water.

Rip clean cotton fabric in 1-inch strips. Make sure the cotton isn’t too coarsely woven.
This next step is very critical: Let the mixture cool enough so that it won’t burn your skin. The first time I did this I didn’t let the blend cool enough and I burned myself! Test the mixture on the palm of your hand, knowing that is much tougher than the sensitive skin under your arms.

Using a dull knife or Popsicle stick, spread the cooled sugar onto your skin. Cover with the cloth strips, let set for a few minutes, and then rip off quickly as you would a bandage.

In the future you can reheat the mixture to a warm and not hot temperature (see above), and reuse. Note that reheating will thicken the paste.

We all think eating fruits means just buying fruits, cutting it and just popping it into our mouths. It’s not as easy as you think. It’s important to know how and when to eat.

What is the correct way of eating fruits?

It means not eating fruits after your meals! Fruits should be eaten on an empty stomach.

If you eat fruit like that, it will play a major role to detoxify your system, supplying you with a great deal of energy for weight loss and other life activities.

Fruit is the most important food. Let’s say you eat two slices of bread and then a slice of fruit. The slice of fruit is ready to go straight through the stomach into the intestines, but it is prevented from doing so.

Cholesterol is not the major culprit in heart disease. It may be hard to believe after all we have heard about the dangers of high cholesterol from our doctors, and the media. But the truth is, it is not the cholesterol levels themselves or the cholesterol containing foods that are the culprits in heart disease, it is those foods and any other thing that causes inflammation in your body that is the major cause of heart disease (as well as diabetes and high blood pressure).

Cholesterol is a soft, waxy substance found among the lipids (fats) in the bloodstream and in all your body’s cells. It’s an important part of a healthy body because it’s used to form cell membranes. Cholesterol also aids in the manufacture of bile (which helps digest fats), and is also important for the metabolism of fat soluble vitamins, including vitamins A, D, E and K. It is the major precursor for the synthesis of vitamin D and of the various steroid hormones (which include cortisol and aldosterone in the adrenal glands, and the sex hormones progesterone, the various estrogens, testosterone, and derivatives ).

How could something so good be so bad?
Cholesterol has been wrongly accused because upon inspection of the arteries of someone at risk for a heart attack, levels of cholesterol and plaque build up are very high. Cholesterol is actually being transported to tissues as part of an inflammatory response that is there to repair damage. It will only lodge itself onto the artery and cause plaque if the artery has become damaged. Inflammation in the artery is what causes this damage. In fact, it is now known that the coronary disease that causes heart attacks is now considered to be caused mostly from chronic inflammation.

To blame cholesterol for heart attacks would be the equivalent of blaming increased police security in a high crime area. It was not the police that caused the crime, they were just placed there in response to the crimes.

A more important question to ask ourselves, is how do we decrease the amount of inflammation in our bodies so that cholesterol will not bind to our arteries?
We must decrease all of those things that we do that cause inflammation and increase things that decrease inflammation. First and foremost we must stay away from foods that cause inflammation in our bodies. Any food that causes a fast rise in blood insulin levels will quickly cause inflammation in the body. These foods are sugar, white breads, most dairy products and almost all packaged and processed foods. What does this leave you with? Fresh, wholesome foods such as fruits, vegetables, lean animal proteins, nuts, and lots and lots of water. Also, taking in lots of omega-3 rich foods will dramatically decrease inflammation in the body (salmon, organic eggs, walnuts and sardines).

Some may be thinking, it is just easier to take a pill and not have to change what I am eating. But you may want to think twice considering the side effects of statins (cholesterol lowering drugs). The most common side effects reported are fatigued, headaches, nausea and the most common of them all, severe muscular pains and muscular degeneration. If you remember that cholesterol is essential for the formation of cell membranes, taking a drug that is drastically lowering cholesterol may be causing membrane damage in neural and muscle tissue. Most people on statins complain of neck, back or leg pain.

Millions of patients are now on cholesterol lowering drugs, but the number of people suffering from heart attacks and heart disease is only increasing. Let’s take a personal responsibility for our health and truly get to the root of the problem. Managing your diet and staying away from those foods that are causing an inflammatory response in your body is your first step to decreasing your chance of heart disease and heart attacks.

Jenna Gurney was just 21 when she discovered she had a malignant melanoma.

“I had this mole on my stomach and it just looked a little bit different and a bit flaky.
“I went to my GP and he advised I had it removed. I was later told it was a malignant melanoma.”
Doctors also tested Jenna’s lymph nodes, but luckily the cancer had not spread.
“On average I used a sunbed twice a week. I wanted a tan all year round. It was just what we did. All my friends did it.”
Jenna, who is 28 now, says she uses false tan if she wants to look brown.
“My message to young girls is ‘don’t use sunbeds at all, and stay safe in the sun - use your suncream.”

Excessive exposure to UV damages the DNA in skin cells which increases the risk of skin cancer and makes skin age faster.

Deadly skin cancer is the third most common cancer after that of the breast and cervix among the grown up ladies.

Cancer Research UK has advised everybody to stay away from sunbeds and use a high factor sun lotion in the sun.

Would you love to take a cruise but you’re worried sick about getting seasick? Cruising is a wonderful way to travel, and you shouldn’t deny yourself a fabulous cruise because of a ‘what if?’. With a little information and preparation, you should be able to have a wonderful cruise experience.

Basically, seasickness is caused by an inner ear imbalance. Remember spinning yourself until you were dizzy when you were a little kid? Seasickness is the result of the same kind of sensitivity to motion. Dizziness, headache, nausea and ultimately vomiting are the most common symptoms.

Most people can manage their discomfort with a little help from natural and medical sources. There are a few general rules, though. Prevention is nine tenths of the cure, so here are a few tips to make your time aboard more comfortable.

1. Avoid greasy and spicy foods. Eat and drink lightly for the first few days. Okay, we all know that cruises are known for their ample and delicious meals. From eggs Benedict and artichoke and goat cheese omelets in the morning to the midnight chocolate buffet, the temptation to indulge is always knocking. Some folks even pack their ‘buffet’ pants, you know, the kind with the elasticized waist, anticipating a little bit of a weight gain. But to keep the queasiness in check, take it easy in the dining room in the early part of your cruise. Save the real indulgences for when you get your sea legs.

2. Focus on the horizon. Get lots of fresh air. When your head starts to spin and your stomach follows suit, get on deck. Gaze at the horizon, which is the only thing that isn’t moving. Relax if you can. Leave your anxiety and stress behind on the dock.

3. Stay busy. If you are able to be active, participate in some light activities such as walking and shuffleboard and practicing your golf swing.

4. Natural remedies. Ginger is one of nature’s best anti-nauseatreatments. Drink a cup of ginger tea, eat a piece of candied ginger, or suck on a ginger lozenge. Even some pickled ginger from the sushi buffet will help. Other food items known to be helpful are dry crackers, carbonated colas, and peppermint. Acupressure bands, stretchy cuffs with a ball-type pressure point that you wear on your wrists, help some people avoid seasickness.

5. Medication. Motion sickness has long been treated with over the counter medications like Dramamine, Gravol, and Bonine. If you have a tendency toward motion sickness, consult with your physician before your cruise and take his or her advice as to which particular medication is best for you.

Heartburn is a painful, burning sensation, felt in the chest area. In fact, it is acid reflux – stomach acid creeping back up into esophagus. Esophagus does not have a protective lining like stomach therefore the creeping acid hurts and causes heartburn.

This is Serious! This incident happened recently in North Texas.

A woman went boating one Sunday taking with her some cans of coke which she put into the refrigerator of the boat. On Monday she was taken to the hospital and placed in the Intensive Care Unit. She died on Wednesday.

The autopsy concluded she died of Leptospirosis. . This was traced to the can of coke she drank from, not using a glass. Tests showed that the can was infected by dried rat urine and hence the disease Leptospirosis.

Rat urine contains toxic and deathly substances.. … It is highly recommended to thoroughly wash the upper part of all soda cans before drinking out of them. The cans are typically stocked in warehouses and transported straight to the shops without being cleaned..

A study at NYCU showed that the tops of all soda cans are more contaminated than public toilets (i.e).. full of germs and bacteria. So wash them with water before putting them to the mouth to avoid any kind of fatal accident.

Celery flavonoid may cut ovarian cancer risk

Increased intake of the flavonoid apigenin, found in celery, parsley, and tomato sauce, may reduce the risk of ovarian cancer by 20 per cent, suggests a new study from Harvard.

“Although none of the individual foods contributing to apigenin intake in this study population were significantly associated with ovarian cancer risk, there was a suggestion of an inverse association with increasing consumption of cauliflower, raisins, tomato sauce, and several other flavonoid-rich foods,” wrote lead author Margaret Gates.
Of all the cancers of the female reproductive system, ovarian cancer has the highest mortality.

In the UK, ovarian cancer causes more than 4,000 deaths per year, according to Cancer Research UK. While in 2003 in the US, a total of 14,657 women died from ovarian cancer, said the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance (OCNA).

The study was funded by the National Cancer Institute at the National Institutes of Health.

According to the American Medical Association, about 95 per cent of all cases of hair loss are due to male pattern baldness, a condition that affects about 40 million American men.

The balding is reported to start by the age of 30 in 25 per cent of men, and in two-thirds by the age of 60. According to the AMA, there is a 4 in 7 chance of inheriting the baldness gene.

The eight-month study included 28 volunteers aged between 18 and 59 with a hair loss problem for approximately two to five years. During the course of the study, instructions were given to not alter their hairstyle, hair care products (shampoo, conditioners, etc) or dye their hair.

Volunteers were randomly assigned to the palm tocotrienol complex (total tocotrienol intake of 100 mg) or the placebo (soft gelatin capsule containing 600 mg soy bean oil).

Hair counts, measured by the counting the number of hairs in a pre-selected 2x2 cm area, were found to significantly increase by an average of 41.8 per cent in the tocotrienol group, with eight volunteers experiencing greater than 50 per cent hair growth. In the placebo group, however, no statistically significant differences in the number of hairs were detected before or after the study period, and only one volunteer showed more than 20 per cent increase in hair count.

In a subway station at rush hour, according to British researchers, as many as 10 percent of all commuters can come in contact with the spray and residue from just one sneeze (or sternutation). That means as many as 150 commuters can be sickened by one uncovered achoo.

No wonder health officials are extremely concerned about the new strain of swine flu that has infected at least 20 Americans in five states, killed some 80 people in Mexico, and has traveled to the other side of the world in New Zealand. Understandably, US authorities - following the lead of the World Health Organization (WHO) - have declared a “public health emergency.”

“This virus has, clearly, a pandemic potential,” says Margaret Chan, director general of WHO. Why? The virulent new H1N1 swine flu strain spreads quickly and efficiently from human to human. It’s “a completely novel virus,” says the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). This latest variant is a mixture of human virus, bird virus, and pig viruses from all over the world. Experts say it’s particularly worrisome because people are getting sick without any encounters with pigs. Even worse, young, healthy people (ages 20-40) are dying at a striking rate, a telltale sign of the worst flu epidemics.

Swine flu fears aren’t new in the United States. In February 1976, a 19-year-old army private at Fort Dix, New Jersey, died within 24 hours of becoming infected with swine flu. Soon, 500 soldiers were afflicted and the US government began a controversial nationwide vaccination campaign. Ultimately, some 40 million Americans were inoculated. As a result, several hundred people developed Guillain- Barré syndrome, a serious neurological condition, and the immunization program was stopped.
What’s going to happen this time? Without question, the disease will spread farther and wider. At this point, as the CDC says, it can’t be contained or controlled. (The flu shot from last fall, for instance, won’t combat this strain).

What can you do to protect yourself? “No single action will provide complete protection,” the CDC notes, but taking a few steps can help reduce the likelihood of transmission of swine flu (or many other infections).

1. Sanitize – i.e. Wash Your Hands Frequently. It may sound obvious, but hand-washing with soap and water for around 20 seconds is the single best thing you can do (if you’re going to go out into the world and interact with other human beings). The CDC estimates that 80 percent of all infections are spread by hands. If you can’t wash your hands regularly, try hand-sanitizers with 60 percent alcohol content.

2. Avoid – i.e. Engage in “Social Distancing.” That’s the fancy term for reducing unnecessary social contact, staying away from crowds, and avoiding people if you’re sick or if you’re concerned that they may be infected. It may not be especially practical when you have to go to, say, work, but experts believe it’s worth repeating: Isolation and avoidance reduce your chances of getting infected or infecting others.
(Researchers in the UK - mentioned above and sponsored by a cold remedy company - found that 99 percent of commuters suffer at least one cold per winter. By contrast, 58 percent of people who work from home and 88 per cent of those who walk to work caught a cold last winter).
If you need to go someplace crowded, the CDC says, try to spend as little time as possible and try to stay six feet away from potentially infected people. Wearing a surgical or dental facemask - cleared by the FDA as a medical device - “can help prevent some exposures,” the CDC says, but they’re not foolproof.

3. Be Alert – i.e. Recognize the Symptoms and Get Help. Swine flu symptoms are similar to regular flu: Fever, body aches, sore throat, cough, runny nose, vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy. If you don’t feel well, seek medical attention. So far, it’s important to note, this swine flu is treatable (and absolutely survivable). It’s resistant to two of four antiviral drugs approved for combating the flu: Symmetrel and Flumadine. But two newer antivirals - Tamiflu and Relenza - appear to work.

What are the chances of a global pandemic? “The situation is uncertain and unpredictable and likely to be a marathon more than a sprint,” says Dr. Richard Besser, acting director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“We expect there to be a broader spectrum of disease here in the U.S.,” adds Dr. Anne Schuchat, interim deputy director for the agency’s Science and Public Health Program. “I do fear that we will have deaths here.”
Swine flu will dominate news headlines in the days ahead. Every case around the world will be carefully tracked and tallied – and deservedly so. I have been maintaining this human body for last 62 years but still I did not know anything about it. I have never cared to understand its way of working.

One must be very careful in her selection of Lipsticks and liners. The cosmetics must be branded, manufactured by reputed companies. Do not compromise with the quality of the cosmetics. It may harm your face and lips. The Lipstick and lip-gloss should be removed before going to the bed with cotton ball dipped in milk. Lipstick left on lips for longer period make the lips hard and rough.

Care must be taken that the lips are not chewed. The delicate skin on the chapped lips should be pulled out.

Stay healthy at 103

103-year old Marge Jetton stays healthy with daily exercise. Her daily routine is to ride bicycle (stationary) for 15 minutes followed by her dumbbell workout. This has helped her to keep her active and strong.

After loosing her husband at 77th year of her marriage, once she found herself alone but soon she gathered courage and joined volunteer organizations to keep her busy. One can easily imagine about her health as at 103-years, she is associated with 7 volunteer organizations.

It is interesting to note that other natives of her town are also keeping very good health since most of them eat well, exercise and volunteer. It is noteworthy that most of them are very religious. That adds quality years to their life.

Most of them are vegans. There is no meat and dairy in their diets. They relish on locally grown beans and nuts. It surely contributes to their health.

Island of Okinawa in Japan is another area which boasts of healthy and long living people. Okinawans live longer than Americans by seven years. Heart attacks and cancer cases are quite rare. They believe in lifelong friends as it helps in reducing the stress. Daily exercise and gardening are some of the preferred ways for 84-years old persons.

Their diets are made of tofu, vegetables and fish. They strongly believe in 80 percent full.
